The 5 most popular sights in Hamburg
Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany after Berlin. Accordingly, numerous meetings, conventions, conferences and events take place in Hamburg every year. The northern German port city is connected to the North Sea via the Elbe. It is a starting point for cruises all over the world. The rail and air network also leaves nothing to be desired. Hamburg is the ideal place for a conference or a team event with a varied supporting programme. We present a small selection of top sights in Hamburg here.
Port of Hamburg
With around 9,000 ship arrivals per year, the Port of Hamburg is the second largest port in Europe after Rotterdam. The largest cruise ships and cargo ships in the world are among the incoming ships. In addition, there are the ships of the navy.
It’s worth taking a little time out at the harbour here after a successful meeting in Hamburg. Enjoy the view of the harbour and the hustle and bustle of the ships over a delicious ice cream.
Or book a harbour tour in Hamburg as a supporting programme for your event. Here you can choose between large and small ships.
Tip: Take a trip on a small launch. The large passenger ships cannot pass through the Speicherstadt.
A special highlight is the evening light tour. Take a leisurely and relaxed trip through the Port of Hamburg, past the illuminated buildings of the Speicherstadt, the Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall, the cranes and container ships.
Famous sights in Hamburg: The Landungsbrücken bridges
The most famous port of call in Hamburg is the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken. Two towers with a green dome mark the listed terminal building at the Landungsbrücken. The S-Bahn and U-Bahn stop at the station of the same name. Start a guided harbour tour from here or use the public ferries of the Hamburg public transport company.
Catamarans also depart from the Landungsbrücken to Helgoland. If you are not seaworthy, try one of the popular fish sandwiches and enjoy the view of Hamburg harbour.
Very close to the Landungsbrücken is the entrance to the famous Elbtunnel. The Old Elbe Tunnel connects the Landungsbrücken with the harbour area in Steinwerder. Pedestrians can cross the tunnel free of charge around the clock.
Jan Fedder Promenade
The Jan Fedder Promenade, named after the famous Hamburg actor, runs directly along the water between the Landungsbrücken and Baumwall underground stations. The approximately 1-kilometre-long footpath was previously called Elbpromenade. Not only the view of the Elbphilharmonie awaits you here, but two other attractions are waiting for you here: the museum ships Rickmer Rickmers and the Cap San Diego.
Elbphilharmonie
The Elbphilharmonie is the landmark on the Elbe. But before the Elphi was finally completed in 2016 after years of construction, it was to Hamburgers what the airport is to Berliners. The concert hall with sophisticated technology has 3 concert halls, a hotel and a panorama terrace and is one of the top sights in Hamburg.
You can reach the 360-panorama view via the plaza and the longest escalator in Western Europe. At a height of 37 metres, a magnificent view over the harbour area awaits you. The Plaza is a public area that serves as an access level for the foyer of the concert halls and the hotel. In addition, the outdoor tour is part of the Plaza and can be visited daily free of charge with prior registration.
Would you like to take a look at the concert halls of the Elphi without a concert ticket? That is also possible. Book a guided tour of the concert halls or an Elbphilharmonie tour if you are more interested in the building and its history.
Speicherstadt
One of the most popular photo spots and top sights in Hamburg is definitely the Speicherstadt. Between Baumwall and Oberhafen lies the world’s largest contiguous warehouse complex. Besides warehouses, many buildings have been converted into offices today. Since 2015, the Speicherstadt has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Top 10 sights of Hamburg can be found in the Speicherstadt. These include the Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall, the International Maritime Museum, the Miniatur Wunderland and the Hamburg Dungeon.
St. Pauli: Reeperbahn and the Great Freedom
One of the top sights in Hamburg is, of course, Hamburg’s most famous street with all its branches. The Reeperbahn is the first port of call for parties and theatre lovers. Along the “Sinful Mile” you will find numerous discos, bars, theatres, nightclubs and strip clubs.
The most famous sights in the district include the Davidwache, Zur Ritze pub with boxing ring in the basement, Beatles-Platz, Große Freiheit street and Hans-Albers-Platz.
